Purpose

Connecting through Context serves as a valuable resource for school counselors to build this context and form their "conntextion" when working with students from different cultural backgrounds. Our goal is to educate, connect, and build a sense of community. We provide a platform for sharing cultural heritage and promoting cross-cultural understanding, offering insights and tools to help counselors create an inclusive, welcoming space for students from diverse backgrounds.

Cultural Humility is defined as a lifelong journey of self-reflection and self-critique, where individuals not only seek to understand the culture of others but also begin by examining their own beliefs and cultural identities. While the term "humility" is often associated with a negative connotation, this website seeks to shift that perspective. Approaching interactions from a place of humility—starting by asking questions and learning about a student's cultural background—is the foundation for creating a meaningful and safe environment for all. Everything and everyone has context, and you will never fully understand or fully connect with someone without it.

Conntextion's Vision

Our vision is to cultivate a global community where cultural diversity is celebrated and promoted as a foundation for mutual respect, learning, and growth. We also recognize the importance of avoiding generalizations about cultures or populations, and want to stress that this website is intended as an initial resource—one that will evolve over time to provide deeper, more specific insights.

"Understanding the cultural beliefs, values, and attitudes of culturally and linguistically diverse children is an important first step in developing a warm and caring relationship with the child and family"
